Hyoyoung Kim

Born in South Korea, and Hyoyoung Kim is an artist working across sculpture, spatial practice.

My work is closer to the dismantled fragments and the space left in the gaps after form has disappeared, rather than to a completed whole. That space, shaped through repetition and structure, does not represent the sculpture’s exterior form, but the boundary that opens between, a spatial gap of sensation. My sculpture and spatial work reside in a state just before form takes shape, holding an as yet unspoken sense of presence; this, in itself, is what I refer to as a liminal sculpture. I focus on sensations that are unresolved, incomplete, and precarious, and still resistant to definition. Certain materials used in the process of visual articulation carry their own distinct language, regardless of their social status. I work with materials detached from artistic authority or symbolic value, materials that may remain unseen, but evoke a tactile awareness of what has not been spoken. This choice stems from a sensitivity to the grain of silence and resistance embedded in the material itself. My sculpture is less about adhering to a specific formal language, and more about beginning again from where form collapses, to think through and explore the liminal spaces that open within its fragments. Through my work, I contemplate spaces that are both potential and indeterminate. These may arise from modes of engagement left open to the viewer, or from a process in which the artist, bound within the act of exploration, seeks to arrive at unbound outcomes. Such spaces are sensed but not defined, present but not yet named.
